Rabat – Hamas has urged the United Nations to refrain from accepting Israel’s narrative concerning the deaths of six Israeli captives whose bodies were found in Gaza.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan called on the UN to gather all relevant facts and hear all sides before drawing conclusions. He emphasized the need for a “balanced” investigation.
Israel has claimed that the captives were killed by Hamas guards, an assertion that the Palestinian group denies, stating that it is still awaiting full details on the matter. Hamdan suggested that the UN should also consider the possibility that Israeli air raids or failed rescue attempts might have contributed to the captives’ deaths.
Abu Obeida, the military spokesperson for Hamas, on Monday warned that captives held in Gaza would return to Israel “in coffins” if Israeli attacks continued across the war-torn enclave. He also mentioned that Hamas had given “new instructions” to their guards in the event of Israeli troops approaching.
Hamdan clarified that these comments were directed at Israel’s ongoing attempts to rescue the captives by force, which he said had previously led to their deaths.
Senior Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq attributed the deaths of the six captives to Israeli airstrikes, Al Jazeera reported. He further accused the United States of complicity through its “bias, support, and partnership” in the ongoing war on Gaza.
In response to the news of the captives’ deaths, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “settle the score” with Hamas, declaring, “We will hunt you down.”
The situation has also sparked significant public outcry in Israel. On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv to demand an immediate deal to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas.
Organized by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, the protests led to major disruptions, including the blocking of major highways and intersections in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The ongoing genocide, which began on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of more than 40,400 Palestinians as Israel continues its extensive bombardment of Gaza. The situation remains volatile, with no resolution in sight.
