Rabat – Getech, a prominent player in the search for vital energy and mineral resources, has joined forces with Sound Energy to investigate the possibilities of natural hydrogen and helium in Morocco.
This exploratory collaboration agreement between the two UK-based energy companies represents a strategic opportunity for both companies to leverage their strengths and harness Morocco’s geological potential.
Natural hydrogen, sometimes referred to as “white” or “geologic” hydrogen, is seen as a potential disruptor in the energy market, with an estimated production cost of around $1 per kilogram. Its development parallels that of the petroleum industry, with a focus on the genetic factors that contribute to natural hydrogen systems.
Helium, deemed a “critical raw material” by the USA, EU, and Canada, is also crucial across various sectors, including medical and telecommunications. It is often found alongside hydrogen deposits, significantly enhancing the economic potential of such discoveries.
As a burgeoning market for natural hydrogen, Morocco boasts favorable geological conditions and extensive onshore basins rich in subsurface resources. The country’s commitment to renewable energy, along with a supportive regulatory framework, enhances its role in the global energy transition.

The partnership will begin with a regional screening study to identify potential areas for further exploration. Getech intends to utilize its advanced geoscience platform, Globe, along with its proprietary gravity and magnetics database and machine learning algorithms to locate promising sites for hydrogen and helium deposits.
At the same time, Sound Energy will leverage its extensive operational expertise and regional geoscience knowledge, supported by its status as Morocco’s largest onshore hydrocarbon exploration permit holder.
Both companies assert that they strive to secure exclusive rights for the exploration and extraction of these resources, and if viable deposits are found, they will advance to essential geophysical and drilling activities.
Getech CEO Richard Bennett expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration in a recent statement: “We look forward to collaborating with Sound Energy to unlock the potential of natural hydrogen and helium resources in Morocco. John Argent, VP of Geoscience at Sound Energy, views the agreement as a significant step forward in expanding exploration activities into new transition energy resources.

This collaboration supports Morocco’s goal to bolster its hydrogen sector, positioning the country as a leader in renewable energy. By tapping into natural hydrogen resources, Getech and Sound Energy align their efforts with Morocco’s vision for a sustainable energy future, boosting its reputation in the global energy landscape.
