Rabat – Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd is very close to returning to Real Sociedad, with only his medical examination standing between him and a second spell at the Spanish club.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Real Sociedad and Olympique de Marseille are close to completing an agreement that would see the Moroccan defender join the Basque side on loan for the 2026-27 season.
The main financial details of the deal are also reportedly close to being finalized. The agreement is expected to include a non-mandatory purchase option, allowing Real Sociedad to sign Aguerd permanently at the end of the loan.
Only medical examination left
Aguerd must now undergo the necessary medical tests before the transfer can be completed.
The examination is particularly important because Real Sociedad want to assess the Moroccan defender’s physical condition. His fitness is reportedly one of the main questions surrounding the move, with the club keen to ensure that he can handle the demands of the upcoming season.
If he passes the examination, Aguerd will be able to complete his return to San Sebastián.
The move would mark a reunion between the defender and a club he already knows well. Aguerd previously played for Real Sociedad during the 2024-25 season, when he was on loan from West Ham United.
Real Sociedad’s defensive plans
Real Sociedad sporting director Erik Bretos has reportedly decided to bring Aguerd back as part of the club’s plans to strengthen its defense.
His arrival could also give the club additional time to manage the futures of other defenders.
The situation includes Jon Pacheco, with the club reportedly reconsidering whether to continue relying on the 25-year-old for another season.
Real Sociedad also completed the permanent signing of Kazunari Kita after being impressed by his development with the club’s reserve team, Sanse.
Aguerd’s experience at international and European level would therefore provide another option for the defensive line.
If the medical examination is successfully completed, the Moroccan is expected to become Real Sociedad’s first signing of the 2026-27 season.
For Aguerd, the move would represent a return to a familiar environment and another opportunity to continue his career in La Liga.
