Rabat – EasyJet has updated the map on its website to accurately reflect Morocco’s territorial integrity, including its southern provinces.
This change follows backlash over an earlier version that excluded the southern provinces in Western Sahara, sparking outrage among Moroccan tourism professionals and the general public on social media.
The British low-cost airline, which operates several routes to Morocco, featured the contentious map in its in-flight magazine, showcasing its 150 destinations.
The publication of the incomplete map prompted calls for immediate correction, with many condemning the oversight as “unacceptable.” Moroccan users on social media labeled the map a “provocation” and “malicious act,” referring to it as a “mutilated map” of Morocco.
EasyJet’s prominent presence in Morocco makes the issue particularly sensitive. In response, tourism professionals urged Moroccan airport authorities to demand a complete map from the airline.
Industry operators noted that EasyJet benefits greatly from Moroccan tourism, reflecting the importance of accurately representing the country’s geography.
Amidst the uproar, EasyJet has finally publicly addressed the concerns raised by Moroccan stakeholders, and fixed the map.
This incident occurred amidst rising international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly regarding the 2007 Autonomy Plan, viewed by many as a credible solution to the ongoing dispute.
