Rabat – Morocco has long been a champion of peace, security, and stability in Africa, according to Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the African Union’s Special Representative for Somalia.
“Morocco’s commitment to peace, stability, and security on the African continent predates the independence of many African countries,” Souef told MAP news agency on the sidelines of the 15th AU High-Level Retreat for Peace, Security, and Stability in Africa.
He highlighted the kingdom’s pioneering role in fostering dialogue, promoting social cohesion, and investing in human capital across the continent.
Morocco’s Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI) has been instrumental in providing support to African nations in various sectors, including education, health, and infrastructure.
Souef expressed admiration for Morocco’s substantial investments in African countries like Cote d’Ivoire, which he sees as a testament to the kingdom’s commitment to a prosperous and stable Africa.
He also praised the contributions of Moroccan experts and officials to the African Union’s efforts to resolve crises, particularly in Sudan.
“Morocco’s presence, both within and outside the African Union, is a positive force for peace and development,” Souef said. “The kingdom’s interventions are driven by a genuine desire to promote peace, security, and prosperity across the continent, without seeking personal gain.”
With Africa facing numerous challenges, including climate change, terrorism, and political instability, Souef stressed the need for collective action to address these issues and build a more secure and prosperous future for the continent.
