A historic performance in Oman
The upcoming concert on Thursday October 17, 2024, at the Royal Opera House Muscat represents a significant milestone for the Al Nour Wal Amal Orchestra, highlighting the remarkable talents of these visually impaired women.
Renowned for its dedication to cultural exchange, the venue will host this powerful performance that underscores the resilience and artistry of its members.
With a lineup that includes big names like Lebanese-Canadian soprano Joyce El Khouri and iconic pieces from various cultures, this concert is set to be a game-changer in how we view women in music.
The event is expected to deliver an unforgettable experience while reinforcing the critical role of women in the arts.
Musical foundations
Founded in 1954 by volunteers, including the visionary Istiklal Radi, this NGO empowers visually impaired girls, giving them a platform to shine in society.
El-Kholy, a total boss who was also the former dean of the Cairo Conservatory, established in 1961 the Al Nour Wal Amal Music Institute.
Under her mentorship, these girls received top-notch training from talented musicians at the Cairo Symphony Orchestra.
They dive deep into all aspects of music, from theory to ear training, even mastering Braille to read music. Talk about making waves in the music world!
Breaking barriers
Fast forward to the ‘70s, and the orchestra made its debut at the Old Opera House in Cairo. Since then, they’ve toured over 30 countries and touched five continents with their incredible performances.
Their setlist combines iconic Western classical compositions with rich Arab/Oriental pieces, often adding a local touch from the countries they visit. Their concerts are always a celebration of culture and resilience.
Current leadership and vision
Leading this powerful ensemble is Tamer Fahmy, a passionate musician who doubles as a teacher.
Tamer is not just a conductor; he’s a mentor for these women, guiding them as they continue to redefine the musical landscape.
The orchestra has been previously led by legends like Ahmed Abul Eid and Ali Osman, ensuring a rich legacy of empowerment.
As the orchestra prepares to take the stage in Oman, they bring with them a powerful message of resilience and empowerment.
Their story is a reminder of the incredible achievements women can accomplish when given the opportunity to share their voices and talents with the world.
