Rabat– In response to King Mohammed VI’s recent address emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and diplomatic efforts to protect Morocco’s territorial integrity, Luis Filipe Tavares, Cape Verde’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has expressed unwavering support for Morocco’s stance on the Sahara dispute.
The King made his comments during the opening of the first session of the fourth legislative year of the 11th Moroccan Legislature, where he addressed several key issues related to Western Sahara.
Tavares underscored the importance of solidarity among nations in relation to Morocco’s territorial integrity and called upon friends of Morocco to deepen their support and collaboration.
“This message resonates as a powerful call for national unity and collective vigilance, underscoring the crucial importance of this cause for Morocco’s territorial integrity and identity. As friends of Morocco, we must also heed this call,” he wrote in an article published in Maroc Diplomatique.
The Cape Verdean politician asserted that the fight for territorial integrity transcends mere politics. Instead, he argued, it is a civic duty that unites nations and peoples. Every citizen and institution has a role to play in defending Morocco’s sovereignty, he further stressed, highlighting the necessity of a united front against potential threats.

For Tavares, friends of Morocco must not only rally in support but also engage in meaningful collaboration.
He urged stakeholders to utilize robust legal, political, and historical arguments to bolster the legitimacy of Morocco’s claims and called for a concerted effort to persuade more nations to recognize and support Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara issue.
“It is imperative that our efforts continue, as we, as political leaders and friends of Morocco, have the sacred duty to persuade more states of the undeniable legitimacy of this cause, drawing on strong legal, political, and historical arguments,” Tavares argued.
He also pointed out the growing recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara by influential countries, including the United States, France, and Spain. This game-changing political evolution is a significant diplomatic victory that reflects the Kingdom’s relentless efforts on the international stage, Tavares stressed.
King Mohammed VI’s Friday speech stressed the considerable international momentum Morocco has achieved regarding the Sahara, particularly noting France’s recent recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the region.
The monarch called for sustained efforts to strengthen these achievements, emphasizing the critical importance of national unity, economic development, and vigorous diplomacy in maintaining Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue.
“Despite all that has been achieved, the next stage requires further mobilization and vigilance on the part of everyone. The goal is to keep consolidating our country’s position, to publicize our just cause, and to thwart our enemies’ maneuvers,” he stated.
