Talbi El Alami: Parliamentary Diplomacy Must Be Strengthened to Align with Royal Vision on Sahara

Rabat – Rachid Talbi El Alami, president of the Moroccan House of Representatives, commented on King Mohammed VI’s recent address by emphasizing the need for a strategic and professional approach in parliamentary diplomacy to support Morocco’s growing momentum on the Sahara issue.

During an interview with Medi 1 TV, Talbi El Alami highlighted that the King’s speech called for a review of the personnel of Moroccan parliamentarians representing the country internationally and suggested bolstering the Directorate of Foreign Relations and Cooperation with new personnel to strengthen Morocco’s advocacy efforts.

The monarch delivered a speech on Friday during the opening of the first session of the fourth year of the 11th legislative term. He emphasized the need for careful and strategic management of parliamentary diplomacy to support the positive momentum surrounding the Western Sahara issue.

“Despite all that has been achieved, the next stage requires further mobilization and vigilance on the part of everyone. The goal is to keep consolidating our country’s position, to publicize our just cause, and to thwart our enemies’ maneuvers,” the king said.

He particularly underlined the importance of “parliamentary diplomacy,” calling on Moroccan parliamentarians to play a more active role in garnering international recognition for the Moroccan Sahara and increasing support for the 2007 Autonomy Plan.

In this respect, El Alami highlighted that the Moroccan Parliament is actively involved in 18 multilateral parliamentary forums across Europe, Latin America, and Africa. He argued that through its participation, whether as an observer or a full member, Morocco is able to consistently defend its territorial integrity, particularly in relation to the Sahara dispute.

The President of the House of Representatives also pointed out the progress made in recent years concerning Morocco’s position on the Sahara. He praised the support extended by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, such as France and the United States, for recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

He added that several countries, including Spain, have backed Morocco’s claim through official statements or by opening consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla.

The King’s speech also noted the importance of continuing to educate and inform the few remaining countries that continue to oppose Morocco’s stance on the Sahara.
