Rabat – Morocco has reinforced its steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause during the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Board session in Rome, calling for urgent measures to alleviate the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The session, running from November 18 to 21, provides a platform to strategize policies and budgets for the WFP’s global operations.
Abdellah Larhmaid, Morocco’s Deputy Permanent Representative to UN organizations in Rome, reaffirmed the country’s consistent advocacy for an immediate ceasefire and intensified humanitarian efforts in the region.
“The Kingdom of Morocco has consistently called for urgent action to secure an immediate and pressing ceasefire in Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian territories,” Larhmaid stated during the session.
He emphasized Morocco’s proactive response under the directives of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, who instructed the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Acharif Agency to deliver emergency humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza, the West Bank, and Al-Quds.
Morocco was the first country to be allowed to facilitate this aid through a land route, showcasing not only the benefits of Morocco’s unique diplomatic position but also the country’s commitment to swift and effective relief efforts.
Larhmaid pointed to the devastating impact of the Israeli blockade and ongoing military actions in Gaza, which have left vital infrastructure in ruins and over two million residents facing hunger, disease, and displacement.
He also warned of escalating Israeli tensions in Lebanon, cautioning that the broader Middle East risks spiraling into a critical phase of instability.
In his address, Larhmaid referenced King Mohammed VI’s Throne Day speech, reaffirming the monarch’s stance that the Palestinian cause remains a cornerstone of Morocco’s foreign policy.
The King emphasized the need for practical solutions to achieve a durable ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis.
Morocco also voiced grave concerns over the suspension of UNRWA’s operations in Gaza, a move that threatens to deepen the suffering of Palestinians. Larhmaid highlighted the indispensable role of UNRWA in providing essential aid and condemned attempts to undermine its humanitarian mission.
The session, chaired by Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Ambassador to UN agencies in Rome, reinforced Morocco’s pledge to collaborate with international partners and the WFP to address the urgent needs of the Palestinian population while advocating for enhanced global coordination to safeguard civilian lives and dignity.
