Rabat – The Moroccan online journal Maroc Hebdo has been under cyberattack since Saturday according to an announcement by the weekly publication.

The attack followed the release of the magazine’s latest issue, which featured the provocative headline: “Algeria Wants War.”

In a series of posts on X, Maroc Hebdo alerted its readers to the ongoing disruption. On November 15, the publication wrote:

“Cyberattack alert! Following the release of issue 1553 of Maroc Hebdo on Friday, November 15 with the cover story ‘Algeria Wants War,’ the website of Maroc Hebdo has been targeted by a cyberattack on Saturday, November 16.”

Yesterday, the magazine provided an update:

“Still ongoing. These cyberattacks appear to be DDOS attacks—malicious attempts to disrupt normal server traffic—likely originating from Algerian hackers.”

In a detailed Facebook post shared today, the journal provided further context, describing the attacks as part of a broader attempt to silence its coverage.

“Our web platform has been under repeated cyberattacks since Saturday, November 16, 2024, with the clear objective of silencing us. These attacks occurred the day after we published a cover story addressing the increasingly belligerent gestures of the Algerian regime toward our country.”

The publication noted that this is not an isolated incident. “In March 2023, our site also lost functionality following the publication of a cover story on Moroccan-Algerian relations, specifically regarding the Sahara issue.

“While the methods have changed—from smear campaigns in the 1990s to today’s digital attacks—the objective remains the same: to suppress critical voices.”

Technical teams are reportedly working around the clock to restore the platform and secure its information systems.
