Rabat – Marsa Maroc has taken a significant step in its international expansion by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Port Authority (NPA) of Liberia to modernize the country’s key ports.
The agreement, announced in Monrovia, aligns with Marsa Maroc’s “Marsa 2030” strategy, highlighting its ambitions to enhance global operations and cement its role as a key player in the international port development sector.
The partnership focuses on two major infrastructure projects aimed at revitalizing Liberia’s main maritime hubs.
One project involves the construction of a new multipurpose terminal at the Port of Monrovia, to be developed under a public-private partnership.
The terminal will be capable of handling various cargo types, from dry bulk to general merchandise, significantly boosting the port’s capacity and traffic.
Additionally, the agreement outlines plans for the modernization of the Port of Buchanan. This initiative will be implemented through a concession agreement that includes the design, financing, construction, and management of a multifunctional terminal.
The goal is to optimize port operations and foster regional economic growth by improving efficiency and increasing port throughput.
This MoU marks the beginning of a collaborative development phase between Marsa Maroc and the NPA, which will span the next 18 months.
During this period, both entities will assess the current state of port operations, share expertise, and finalize detailed concession agreements.
Sekou H. Dukuly, Director-General of the NPA, expressed confidence in the project in a statement, calling it “a new chapter for Liberia’s port infrastructure” that will enhance the country’s role in regional logistics.
For thier part, Reda Moukhli, Director of Strategy and Port Development at Marsa Maroc, called the agreement a “solid foundation for a strengthened partnership” that would foster the modernization and competitiveness of Liberian ports.
This partnership builds on Marsa Maroc’s growing international presence, following its first overseas contract in Cotonou, Benin. By expanding its operations beyond Morocco, Marsa Maroc continues to position itself as a leader in global port development.
