Rabat– As of October 25, a total of 63,766 families have benefited from the monthly financial aid allocated to victims of the Al-Haouz earthquake. This was announced by Mustapha Baitas, government spokesperson and Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament at a press briefing on Thursday.
Speaking after the weekly government council meeting, Baitas provided an update on the ongoing efforts to support those affected by the disaster.
He revealed that, since the last meeting of the inter-ministerial committee overseeing the earthquake’s reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, a total of MAD 9.5 billion ($9.6 million) had been allocated for financial aid to the victims. Of this amount, MAD 4.75 billion ($4.8 million) have been disbursed as direct state assistance to families as of October 25.
Baitas also announced that the government had extended the duration of emergency aid payments, which provide MAD 2,500 ($253.47) per family, by an additional five months. This extension aims to allow affected families to complete the rehabilitation of their homes, as many families who have received permits for reconstruction have yet to finish the necessary work. The cost of this extension is estimated at MAD 750 million ($7.6 million).
Baitas stated that 51,938 families have received financial assistance for the rehabilitation of their damaged homes, amounting to a total of MAD 1.775 billion ($ 1.7 Million). This assistance has been distributed in four installments to help families rebuild their homes.
The government, Baitas emphasized, is fully committed to managing the aftermath of the earthquake. This operation requires significant resources, coordination, and follow-up efforts to ensure the effective delivery of aid and support to affected communities.
Baitas also highlighted the importance of the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation programs, which are supported by King Mohammed VI. He described the resources allocated to these programs and the objectives they have achieved as “enormous and significant,” reflecting the government’s dedication to the recovery and rebuilding of the earthquake-affected regions.
