Rabat– The 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) kicked off on Friday evening at the Palais des Congrès in the heart of the red city.

The grand opening, graced by the presence of Morocco’s Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, drew an illustrious gathering of personalities from the worlds of cinema, art, culture, and media.

The red carpet sparkled with elegance, showcasing a breathtaking display of glamour as stars adorned in dazzling gowns and impeccably tailored suits made their way to the ceremony. Each appearance captured the essence of cinema — a harmonious blend of glamor, mystery, and intensity — setting the tone for what promises to be an extraordinary edition of the iconic festival.

Held under the “High Patronage of King Mohammed VI,” the festival will run until December 7, turning Marrakech into a hub of global cinema. This year’s edition of the festival features 14 films in competition, vying for the coveted “L’Etoile d’Or.”

The opening ceremony cultivated an immediate connection between world-renowned filmmakers, actors, and an enthusiastic audience eager to celebrate cinematic artistry. Adding to the evening’s prestige was the introduction of the jury, led by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his works such as “Challengers” and “Suspiria.”

In an impassioned speech, Guadagnino expressed his deep emotional connection to Marrakech, recalling his first visit to the city in 2002. He described an immediate sense of belonging, referring to himself as “half Moroccan” and likening the relationship between Marrakech and cinema to two sides of the same coin.

With the festival taking center stage in Marrakech’s vibrant cultural scene for the better part of the coming days, the city will vibrate with cinematic energy, offering a platform for discovering new voices and celebrating established talents.

As the organizers said in a press release announcing the event’s glamorous kickoff, this year’s festival aims to reaffirm Marrakech’s position as a beacon of cultural exchange and artistic inspiration in the global film community.
