Rabat – King Mohammed VI sent a heartfelt message of congratulations to President Mahmoud Abbas, expressing warm wishes for health and well-being, on the occasion of Palestine’s national Independence Day holiday.

The monarch expressed pride in the “strong fraternal bonds and fruitful cooperation” between Morocco and Palestine, wishing for Palestinian people success in achieving their aspirations for freedom, independence, and sovereignty.

The King also reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing their right to an independent state, with East Jerusalem as the capital, through international legal resolutions.

Morocco has been committed to its position in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, frequently recalling that it supports Palestinian independence and an end to Israel’s genocide of Gaza.

Earlier this month, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch renewed Morocco’s support during the Arab-Islamic summit, stating that the Palestinian case remains a central pillar of the country’s foreign policy.

Morocco’s call for a ceasefire and long-term solution to the ongoing genocide in Gaza aligns with the King’s vision of a strategic shift from crisis management to concrete peacebuilding.

In September, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita reiterated the same position, noting that their Palestine position is a central part of the country’s foreign policy.

“We stand firmly behind the Palestinian Authority in its efforts to safeguard the legitimate rights of its people,” he stated, highlighting Morocco’s support.

During his speech in July on Throne Day – commemorating the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne – King Mohammed VI expressed deep concern about the situation in Gaza.

“The keen interest we take in the situation prevailing in the country does not mean we are oblivious of, or insensitive to, the tragedy befalling our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” the King said.

He additionally said that the plight of Palestinians, particularly those suffering in Gaza, requires global efforts to work towards a definitive solution.

“If putting an end to the war in Gaza is an urgent priority, then this must be achieved concurrently with opening up political prospects conducive to a just and lasting peace in the region,” the monarch stressed.

Morocco has witnessed frequent protests in major cities since the start of the genocide last in October of 2023,  in which citizens have gathered to condemn and denounce Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

Protesters have also been calling upon Morocco’s government to end diplomatic ties with Israel.
