Rabat – Moroccan and French officials have held a meeting in Paris to improve migration procedures and strengthen collaboration. The meeting was part of the ongoing efforts between the two countries to address migration challenges and opportunities together.

Organized by Morocco’s embassy in France on Friday, the meeting brought together high-ranking officials from both countries.

The Moroccan delegation included Khalid Zerouali, Director of Migration and Border Surveillance, and Samira Sitaïl, Morocco’s Ambassador to France. French representatives included Simon Fetet, Director of Immigration at the Ministry of the Interior, and Mathilde Grammont, Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of the Interior.

The discussions focused on key issues such as preventing irregular migration, enhancing the process for issuing consular travel documents, and ensuring better cooperation for readmissions. Both sides expressed their commitment to fulfilling the migration-related agreements set during President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Morocco.

Last month, Macron and France’s first lady came to Morocco for a three-day official visit at the invitation of King Mohammed VI. The visit, which aimed to strengthen French-Moroccan relations, came soon after Paris announced its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

As part of the Paris meeting, French officials also met with 17 Moroccan Consuls General working across France. This session allowed for direct communication about challenges and ideas to improve migration systems.

A joint statement spoke about the importance of collaboration in areas like legal mobility, preventing irregular migration, and supporting the Moroccan diaspora in France. Officials noted the progress made in visa approvals for Moroccan students and the efforts to protect the rights of Moroccan communities abroad.

Future discussions will continue in early 2025 to evaluate progress and set new goals.
