Rabat – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken commended Morocco’s significant contribution to global efforts on artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, noting the country’s role in the establishment of a new UN group focused on sharing best practices for AI adoption.

Blinken made his remarks earlier this week at a UN Security Council Meeting on AI.

“This summer, the U.S. and Morocco also established a group at the United Nations, open to all member states, where experts from every region are sharing best practices for adopting artificial intelligence,” he said, describing the process as  “real progress.”

Blinken, however, acknowledged that more work “Remains to be done.”

For Blinken, AI has the potential to do “enormous good,”  noting that the revolutionary new technology has been widely used in several sectors, including among scientists.

While emphasizing the importance of embracing this tool, he warned that AI  can pose tremendous threats to international peace and security if it is misused.

“With AI, hackers can make cyber attacks more destructive, harder to trace,” he said, emphasizing the need to set rules of the road for AI to minimize similar challenges.

Calling for shared responsibility and cooperation, he said he is convinced that the international community can shape AI for the better.

Morocco‘s government is well aware of both the positive and negative aspects of AI.

In April, a parliamentary group submitted a bill to regulate the use of AI in the country.

It notably seeks to address the negative aspects and illegal usage of AI, emphasizing the necessity to regulate it.

The bill also proposed the creation of an agency dedicated to AI governance.

AI tools are already in widespread use in academia and for personal use in Morocco.

A survey from the CCI Global Consumer Sentiment by the Boston Consulting Group said in August that Morocco is among the top users of ChatGpt globally.

A remarkable 80% of Moroccan consumers are aware of ChatGPT, with 38% actively using the AI-driven tool, the survey shows.
