Rabat – King Mohammed VI received Mauritania’s President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, today at the Royal Palace in Casablanca.
The Royal Cabinet said in a press release that the meeting reflects “the strong relations of trust and cooperation between the two countries and the sincere brotherly ties uniting the two fraternal peoples.”
During their talks, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive development of the Morocco-Mauritania partnership across various sectors.
They also expressed their shared commitment to enhancing strategic projects that connect their neighboring countries, added the statement.
The two heads of state reaffirmed their determination to collaborate on major royal initiatives in Africa. This includes the African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline and efforts to improve access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
Upon his arrival at the Royal Palace, President El Ghazouani was honored by a review of the Royal Guard, before participating in the traditional Moroccan ceremony of offering milk and dates.
The two countries have been keen on strengthening their ties through regular high-level meetings aimed at boosting cooperation and shared political dialogue.
This meeting comes after similar discussions took place earlier this month, when Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, met with the President of Mauritania’s National Assembly, Mohamed Ould Meguett, in Rabat.
Mauritania plays an important role in the Western Sahara dispute. While the country recognizes the Polisario’s self-proclaimed SADR, it has maintained a neutral stance and avoided supporting Algeria’s anti-Moroccan policies. This balanced position makes Mauritania a key partner for Morocco in its efforts to maintain stability in the region.
Morocco remains committed to building positive relations with Mauritania while standing firm on its position in the Sahara dispute. King Mohammed VI reaffirmed his country’s stance in a speech to parliament in October, where he reiterated that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan is the only basis for a fair and lasting solution to the dispute.
