King Mohammed VI has reportedly ordered the extension of the Moroccan relief contingent in Valencia to assist with the ongoing cleanup efforts in areas affected by the devastating DANA storm.
The extension is part of a bilateral agreement between Morocco and Spain, focusing on removing mud and debris from garages that remain submerged after the floods, converging reports have indicated.
These efforts come in the aftermath of the floods that struck Spain on October 29 and killed at least 223 people, including Moroccans. Several people are still missing.
The Moroccan contingent will continue assisting their Spanish counterparts until January 10, reports have suggested.
“We’ve been working in different areas, and now we’re at the intersection of Valencia Street with Almassereta, near the Armed Forces Bridge,”a worker told Huffington Post.
The worker said they will remain in the region until they are told their work is no longer needed.
Under King Mohammed VI’s instructions, Morocco sent an exceptional convoy of 24 pump trucks and over 70 operators to support the relief effort and assist Spain in the aftermath of the devastating Dana storm.
In a statement following news of the dispatch of the Moroccan contingent, Morocco’s royal cabinet said the decision to extend assistance to Spain reflects the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
The North African kingdom sent another aid convoy consisting of 13 vehicles — namely 12 water pump trucks and one designated for repairs and equipment.
In response, a number of high-ranking Spanish officiel, including ministers, have repeatedly thanked Morocco for the gesture, describing the country as a genuine and reliable ally.
Last month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez thanked Morocco for its neighborly assistance and solidarity. “In these challenging weeks for Spain due to the storm, international and European solidarity has been immense,” Sánchez said in a message on social media platform X, adding, “All of Spain thanks you.”
