Rabat – Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad (MREs) has paid tribute to the solidarity campaign that the Moroccan diaspora launched to contribute to rescue efforts in Valencia following the devastating Dana storm.

The foundation released a statement today, extending condolences to Spanish and Moroccan families that lost relatives during the floods, noting that the Moroccan diaspora launched rescue and aid operations to join Spain’s efforts in tackling the devastating crisis.

“Since the beginning of the disaster, several Moroccan associations and cultural centers have published statements, mainly on social media, expressing their support, solidarity, and compassion for the victims and their condolences for the deceased,” the foundation said.

The statement added that this campaign also encouraged the Moroccan diaspora members to contribute to the relief efforts, adding that donation collection points have been also set up in different locations across Spain.

“Hairdressers, cooks, housewives, nurses, teachers, technicians, and other professionals got to work in the hardest-hit areas, working side by side in rescue, cleaning, and debris removal operations, encouraged by their faith and willingness to help in any way possible,” the statement added.

The foundation highlighted how Spaniards appreciated the Moroccan diaspora’s mobilization, renewing support and solidarity. They added that Moroccans have traveled to the affected areas from different regions, including Barcelona, Tarragona, Almeria, Malaga, and more.

The devastating floods have killed at least 224 people, and around 216 of these victims are from Valencia. Additionally, seven of those killed were  Moroccans, and an additional eight remain missing.

At King Mohammed VI’s instructions, Morocco sent two humanitarian convoys to Spain, including operators and trucks to contribute to the ongoing efforts to tackle the flood crisis.

The first humanitarian convoy included 24 fire pump trucks and 0 operators, who arrived in Spain on Wednesday to support relief efforts.

The second Moroccan relief effort includes 13 trucks, with 12 fire engines and one repair and tool truck.
