Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that Marrakech’s Palais des Congrès will host the 2024 CAF Awards on Monday, December 16 – an event that will bring together Africa’s finest football talent.
The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Moroccan time, and is set to be a grand evening honoring the outstanding achievements in African football over the past year.
Morocco’s growing reputation as a football hub makes Marrakech an ideal venue for this event. With its rich history and modern facilities, the city provides a fitting stage for a gathering of football’s most influential figures and promising talents.
The awards will feature the prestigious “African Player of the Year” categories for both men and women, celebrating players whose performances have defined the season for their clubs and national teams.
In addition to the Player of the Year awards, the event will also recognize achievements in categories such as best coach, goalkeeper, national team, and overall club.
Last month, CAF announced its final shortlist for the National Team of the Year 2024, in which Morocco’s Atlas Lions was notably missing. This omission generated widespread debate and shock, given Morocco’s fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and consistent success on both continental and global stages.
Fans and critics alike questioned CAF’s selection criteria, saying that this is an unfair hit to Morocco’s Atlas Lions’ record-setting performances in recent years.
These awards will reflect the breadth of talent and commitment that have shaped African football, acknowledging the hard work of players and teams across the continent.
Among the nominees for the Men’s Player of the Year award is Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, known for his impactful performances with Paris Saint-Germain and the Atlas Lions.
He faces competition from players like Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra and Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, who have also delivered remarkable performances throughout the year.
The women’s category showcases equally impressive contenders. Morocco’s Sanaâ Mssoudy has made major contributions to her team and joins a list of nominees that includes Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie and Malawi’s Tabitha Chawinga – both of whom have been instrumental in raising the profile of women’s football on the continent.
This year’s CAF Awards will bring together football professionals, fans, and stakeholders to reflect on a year filled with remarkable achievements.
