Fez – Barid-Al-Maghrib (Poste Maroc), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, has released a commemorative postage stamp celebrating Marrakech’s designation as the Islamic World Capital of Culture for 2024.
The commemorative stamp, titled “Marrakech, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2024,” features the iconic Menara Pavilion, surrounded by its reflective basin, lush palm trees, and the majestic Atlas Mountains in the background.
Rendered in warm ochre tones and intricate patterns, the design encapsulates Marrakech’s rich history and architectural splendor, embodying its enduring cultural significance.
In a statement on the new stamp, the post office says that the addition exemplifies Barid Al-Maghrib’s commitment to celebrating Morocco’s exceptional cultural heritage and honoring the accolades bestowed upon its cities.
The stamp joins a distinguished philatelic collection dedicated to Marrakech, including the 2017 stamp commemorating Jemaa El Fna Square and the 1960 stamp marking the 900th anniversary of the city’s founding.
The unveiling ceremony took place in the Red City on Sunday, December 8, and was attended by notable figures. Among these included the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication; Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, President of the Marrakech Communal Council; Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, Director-General of ICESCO Salim Mohamed Al Malik and Barid Al-Maghrib’s Director General; Amin Benjelloun Touimi.
With this new addition, Barid Al-Maghrib continues its tradition of recognizing Moroccan cities celebrated by Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) . In 2007 the post office issued a stamp honoring Fez’s designation as a cultural capital.
Marrakech’s stamp not only commemorates the iconic city’s new cultural milestone but also reinforces its status as a symbol of Morocco’s vibrant legacy on the global stage.
