Rabat– Three international drug traffickers, arrested in Morocco earlier this year, have been officially charged in the United States for their involvement in large-scale fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, known for handling the most high-profile and sensitive cases, confirmed the indictment of these individuals, who were apprehended by the Moroccan National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ) in April.
The suspects, identified as Xiang Gao from China, Oleksandr Klochkov from Ukraine, and Igors Kricfalusijs from Lithuania, were detained in Marrakech on April 17, following the issuance of international arrest warrants by US authorities. Their recent extradition to the US has led to their initial appearance in court, where they face serious charges of conspiracy, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
The arrest followed a series of coordinated security operations between Moroccan and US law enforcement. The three suspects, aged 22 to 25, were allegedly operating within global networks responsible for the illicit production and distribution of fentanyl and methamphetamine. The drugs were intended for US markets, contributing to the ongoing crisis of overdose deaths linked to these substances.
The Moroccan authorities’ swift action and cooperation with US agencies were pivotal in dismantling this network. “Fentanyl and its derivatives continue to wreak havoc on our communities,” said Edward Y. Kim, Acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. “These individuals reportedly used aggressive methods to avoid detection and flood our country with highly dangerous chemicals.”
US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland also highlighted the importance of holding drug traffickers accountable. “Those responsible for flooding our country with fentanyl must be held accountable for their actions.”
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Anne Milgram, emphasized that the indictment of these traffickers “underscores the agency’s commitment to targeting all levels of the international fentanyl trade.”
According to Milgram, the suspects had played a key role in facilitating the transport of tons of precursor chemicals used in fentanyl and methamphetamine production, primarily sourced from China. These chemicals were then used to manufacture drugs bound for the US.
Milgram also revealed that the defendants had trained other traffickers on the production process, further solidifying their role in the illicit trade. Their arrest is seen as a major victory in the global fight against fentanyl trafficking, with Milgram noting that the indictment sends a clear message to drug traffickers worldwide.
