Rabat – Morocco and Canada are joining forces to enhance their cooperation in the water and environmental sectors, with plans to extend their efforts to the broader African continent.
Cheryl Urban, Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Africa and Global Affairs, made this announcement following a meeting with Nizar Baraka, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water.
The purpose of this visit is to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries and leverage Morocco’s established expertise in water management. The Canadian diplomat emphasized that this collaborative initiatives aimed at improving the exchange of expertise and technological innovation in these sectors.
“I believe there are great opportunities for cooperation between Canada and Morocco to move forward together and work with the rest of Africa… in the fields of the environment and water,” she stated.
In his remarks, Baraka highlighted the significance of these exchanges, highlighting Morocco’s water policy and the challenges related to sustainable water management. He also commended Canada’s technical support for the development of water and irrigation projects.
This meeting is part of broader efforts to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries, focusing on reinforcing joint action for climate resilience and sustainable development. Morocco and Canada aim to establish synergies to address environmental and water challenges across the region.
Canada is not Morocco’s sole partner in this field. The European Union and the National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE) have also renewed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in water management.
This partnership is part of elevating Morocco’s efforts towards sustainable water use within the framework of the National Program for Shared Liquid Sanitation and Reuse of Treated Wastewater. The program aims to achieve a 95% water connection rate and an 80% reduction in pollution in urban areas by 2040.
