Doha – A two-year-old Moroccan boy and a 41-year-old man were killed in a knife attack targeting a kindergarten group in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, on Wednesday.
The incident, which also left three others injured, has prompted nationwide shock and political debate in Germany.
According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, the suspect, a 28-year-old Afghan national, “suddenly and deliberately” attacked the children with a kitchen knife as they were walking through a park.
The 41-year-old victim, who was a passerby, reportedly intervened to protect other children in the group, likely saving their lives before losing his own.
Among the three injured victims were another child, a 61-year-old man, and a kindergarten teacher.
Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach confirmed that all injured victims are now out of life-threatening danger.
The suspect, who entered Germany in mid-November 2022, was quickly apprehended by police.
Investigation revealed he had been under psychiatric care and had previously been involved in at least three violent incidents.
Authorities found psychiatric medications in his residence during a search.
Herrmann stated that no evidence of Islamic extremist motives was discovered, with investigations pointing toward mental health issues as a likely factor.
The incident has sparked immediate political reactions. Chancellor Olaf Scholz called it an “unfathomable act of terror” and demanded answers about why the suspect, who was due for deportation, remained in Germany.
The suspect had reportedly announced his voluntary departure in writing approximately six weeks before the attack.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed condolences to the families of both victims, while opposition leaders, including CDU chairman Friedrich Merz, called for stricter security measures.
The attack has reignited debates about Germany’s migration and security policies, with various political figures, including BSW leader Sahra Wagenknecht and AFD chairwoman Alice Weidel, calling for more stringent measures regarding deportation of individuals required to leave the country.
Police investigations are ongoing as authorities work to establish a complete timeline of events and determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
