Rabat – The government is ready to step up efforts to integrate the Amazigh language into Moroccan’s daily life, said Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch on Sunday during a ceremony in Agadir marking the “Id Yennayer”, the Amazigh New Year.
“The government is committed to strengthening the implementation of the official character of the Amazigh language,” he told reporters. “This is part of the constitutional recognition of Amazigh.”
The ceremony took place in Ibn Zaydoun Park and the historic Kasbah of Agadir Oufella. It put on full display the rich Amazigh cultural heritage, where guests enjoyed traditional dishes, admired artisan crafts, and listened to live performances from Amazigh musicians.
Festivities of Id Yennayer 2975 will continue until January 17. The programme includes shows, food stalls, and cultural exhibitions at 12 venues across Agadir. Celebratory ornaments and flags decorate public squares, gardens, and seaside promenades throughout the coastal city.
Commenting on this occasion of shared unity to uplift the Amazigh, Akhannouch stated, “It’s a chance to highlight a cultural heritage shared by all Moroccans.”
In May 2023, King Mohammed VI announced that January 14, the first day of the Amazigh New Year, would become an official public holiday in Morocco.
Celebrations are taking place throughout the North African country. The Regional Council of Souss Massa, the Regional Tourism Council, and the Timitar Festival Association are co-organising these festivities to promote Amazigh culture and integrate it into Moroccan’s identity.
