Rabat – Morocco has strongly condemned the publication of maps by official Israeli social media accounts that depict a so-called “historic Israel,” which includes territories belonging to Arab countries such as Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a press release yesterday quoting a source from the ministry as saying that these false maps are harmful to peace efforts in the region.

It added that such actions undermine the two-state solution and the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The source also reaffirmed Morocco’s solidarity with Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, and emphasized its support for their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Earlier this week, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a map on its Arabic-language social media account that depicted the so-called biblical boundaries of the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judea. The map extended into territories part of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinian territories.

“Did you know that the Kingdom of Israel existed 3,000 years ago?” the post reads. Framed as an educational piece about biblical history, the post drew sharp criticism from several Arabic country.

Palestine and Jordan have also strongly criticized Israel for publishing these maps on its official social media accounts. Palestinian officials called the map a clear violation of international laws and resolutions, and described it as a provocative move that undermines peace efforts.

They urged the international community, including the US, to take immediate action against Israeli policies and actions, which they say are harming the Palestinian people and destabilizing the region.

Jordan also condemned the map, calling it baseless and accusing Israel of making false claims about historical territorial rights. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry criticized Israel for coinciding this map’s release with inflammatory statements by far-right Israeli officials, such as Bezalel Smotrich, who has promoted annexing the West Bank.

In March 2023, Smotrich attended an event in Paris where he made a controversial and provocative statement. While speaking, he stood beside a map that depicted a so-called “Greater Israel,” which included Jordan as part of Israel’s territory.
