Doha – A court in Beni Mellal has sentenced two individuals in connection with the death of police officer Abdelghni Redouane during a security operation last month.
The main defendant, a 34-year-old wanted on four national warrants for drug trafficking, received a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence, while his accomplice was sentenced to two and a half years.
The incident occurred on December 17, 2024, in Beni Mellal during an arrest operation targeting the main suspect.
When officers attempted to apprehend him, the suspect resisted arrest and threatened law enforcement personnel with a knife.
During the confrontation, a police officer drew his service weapon, resulting in an accidental discharge that fatally struck Officer Redouane in the chest.
Redouane was immediately transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Following his death, General Director of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi announced Redouane’s posthumous promotion to the rank of police sergeant, with benefits extended to his family.
The operation, which ended in the arrest of both suspects, was conducted by the Anti-Gang Unit in Beni Mellal, where Redouane served as a member.
The main defendant was being pursued for multiple cases related to drug trafficking and psychotropic substances.
The court’s verdict was delivered on Monday as a first-instance ruling in the case that has drawn attention to the risks faced by law enforcement officers during security operations.
