Fez-Taounate Expressway Sees Advancement Rate of 65%

Rabat – Morocco’s Fez-Taounate expressway has undergone considerable advancement in recent months, with a 65% completion rate.

Due to the area’s unique geological and geographical conditions, this vital infrastructure initiative, part of a partnership agreement to develop key road networks in the Fez-Meknes region, is divided into four segments.

The budget allocated for the Fez-Taounate expressway, spanning 71 kilometers, is estimated at MAD 1.56 billion ($ 155 million).

The project is jointly funded by the Ministry of Equipment and Water (MAD 985 million), the Fez-Meknes region (MAD 485 million), the Taounate Provincial Council (MAD 40 million), and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the Northern Provinces (MAD 50 million).

Once fully operational, the expressway should contribute to ending Tounates’s isolation, boosting its economic potential, improving road safety, and reducing travel time between the town and Fez.

As Morocco is preparing to host the 2030 World Cup, the country has launched a project to boost its expressway network.

It initiated this highway plan to reach MAD7.74 billion (approximately $735 million) by 2030, divided into MAD 265 million ($25 million) for 2025, MAD 245 million ($23 million) for 2026, and MAD 263 million ($25 million) for 2027.

The North African country is also working on boosting expressways in its southern provinces, with the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway, a transformative infrastructure project in Morocco, reaching 98% complete, significantly enhancing connectivity to the country’s southern regions.

The Société Nationale des Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM), which is responsible for building and maintaining the country’s highways, reported consolidated revenues of MAD 1.19 billion ($113 million) at the end of March 2024.

These ambitious projects and efforts align with Morocco’s strategic goal of boosting national development to facilitate better access to key cities and enhance trade and tourism fluidity. The country’s vision is also in line with its sustainable development and territorial cohesion goals.
