Rabat – Moroccan Minister of Foreign Nasser Bourita met with Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), on Monday during his working visit to Morocco.
The two officials discussed the strong partnership between Morocco and the UNWTO and expressed their shared goals and vision for the future of global tourism, according to a statement from the Moroccan foreign ministry.
Bourita spoke of Morocco’s leading role in promoting sustainable tourism under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who he said sees tourism as a key driver of development and economic growth.
Another topic of discussion was the UNWTO’s decision to open a Thematic Office in Morocco. The office will act as a hub for cooperation between Morocco, the UNWTO, and its member countries. Bourita said that this approach aligns with the Royal vision for “active, supportive and pragmatic South-South cooperation,” added the ministry’s statement.
Bourita also spoke about Morocco’s preparations for hosting major sporting events, including the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. He explained that these events offer great opportunities to promote Moroccan tourism while respecting global standards of sustainability. Sports tourism, he noted, is central to Morocco’s development strategy as it contributes to peace and unity among countries.
The country has recently unveiled a comprehensive plan to prepare for the two major events. This includes renovating stadiums and key airports, as well as ensuring high-standard accommodation and straightening overall infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Pololikashvili commended Morocco’s commitment to job creation and promoting sustainable tourism under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. He also reaffirmed the UNWTO’s support for Morocco’s major projects and pledged expertise and technical assistance to ensure their success.
During the meeting, Pololikashvili unveiled the English version of a promotional book titled “Tourism Doing Business – Investing in Morocco,” which sheds light on investment opportunities in the country. The UN plans to translate the book into Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and French to reach a global audience.
