Rabat — Ports in Morocco have recorded a solid increase in total port traffic, showing a 15.2% rise in 2024. The total volume reached of goods transmitted was 241.2 million tons in 2024, a rise from the 209.4 million tons recorded in 2023, according to the latest reports from the Ministry of Equipment and Water.
The ministry reported that domestic traffic at the ports saw an 11.4% increase, reaching 125.5 million tons, and a 19.5% growth in transshipment volumes totaling 115.6 million tons compared to 2023.
In 2024, the breakdown of port traffic showed that the transshipment activity led with a share of 47.9%, while exports accounted for 16.9%, cabotage for 3.1%, and bunkering for 0.7%.
The Tanger Med port complex has strengthened its position as a major Mediterranean logistics platform, with a substantial 21.3% increase in container transshipment volumes, reaching 112.6 million tons and 9.6 million TEUs, up by 18.9%.
Also, Morocco’s imports in 2024 totaled 75.5 million tons, recording a 12.4% increase from the previous year. This increase was mainly attributed to the rise in import volumes of cereals (up by 14.5%), sulfur (up by 26%), and hydrocarbons (up by 8.3%).
Morocco’s export volume witnessed a 13.3% growth in 2024, totaling 40.8 million tons. Key drivers of this increase were fertilizers (12.1 million tons, up by 10.1%), raw phosphate (6.5 million tons, up by 48.4%), sulfuric acid (2 million tons, up by 151.9%), and phosphoric acid (3.4 million tons, up by 32.2%).
Moroccan ports facilitated the transit of 5,339,139 passengers, reflecting an 11.8% increase from the previous year. According to the ministry, the ports located along the Gibraltar Strait, such as Tanger Med and Tangier City, managed over 82% of the total passenger traffic.
Regarding cruise activities, there was a significant recovery, with 270,483 cruise passengers reported in 2024, a 40.1% increase from 2023.
Additionally, the volume of landings from coastal and artisanal maritime fishing in 2024 experienced a slight decline of 1%, amounting to 1.33 million tons.
The maritime traffic in Moroccan ports saw substantial growth in 2024, with the arrival of over 28,787 commercial vessels, reflecting a 3% increase compared to 2023.
