Rabat – A fire broke out at the Conference Palace in Marrakech on Thursday evening, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to three others, according to local sources.
The fire reportedly started inside an elevator, leading to the tragic deaths and varying degrees of injuries for the three survivors.
The incident occurred as preparations were underway for the upcoming 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, scheduled to be held at the venue from February 18 to 20.
Emergency responders transported the bodies to the morgue at the regional hospital in Marrakech, and took the injured to the hospital’s emergency department for medical attention.
The public prosecutor’s office has launched a judicial investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and any related circumstances.
Preliminary reports suggest that electrical malfunction in the elevator may have triggered the fire, trapping the victims amid the flames.
The incident caused panic, prompting a swift response from firefighting teams who evacuated the building and secured the area. Security authorities, led by the regional security chief, quickly arrived at the scene to supervise rescue and firefighting operations.
Efforts are also underway to assess the fire’s impact on the building’s infrastructure, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
