Rabat – Tangier’s Civil Protection teams continue to search for a young man who went missing after jumping into the sea during a dangerous TikTok challenge. The incident happened at Merkala Beach on Saturday evening.

A source from Civil Protection told SNRT News that rescue teams have been searching for three days but have not found any trace of the young man.

The victim, known on TikTok as “Moul Lferran,” was filming a challenge where he set himself on fire before jumping into the sea to put out the flames. But he was unable to swim due to the strong waves.

The TikToker was known for posting videos of dangerous challenges on the platform.

A security source told SNRT News that the young man was with his brother and a friend, who were filming the video. They were the ones who reported the accident. Authorities have since detained them for questioning.

The incident has reignited the debate about the dangers of social media challenges, especially for young people.

Many young people, especially children, have lost their lives in recent years due to dangerous social media challenges. These challenges especially took off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among these is the “blackout challenge” which encourages participants to intentionally restrict their breathing to the point of losing consciousness. The challenge involves holding one’s breath, using objects like belts or ropes, or applying pressure to the neck to induce a brief state of dizziness.

The challenge reportedly went viral on TikTok around 2021, leading to multiple deaths worldwide, particularly among children.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has recently fined TikTok $10 million over viral challenges that led to the deaths of three children. The young children died after taking chemical substances as part of a challenge.
