Youssef En-Nesyri is proving his doubters wrong in style. The Moroccan striker has hit top form recently at Fenerbahce, firing in goals in every game at the Turkish league.
The former Sevilla forward bagged a brace against Kasimpasa, taking his league tally to 15 in the SuperLig and his total for the season to 23 in all competitions combined. Those numbers make him one of the deadliest poachers in Turkiye right now.
Speaking after the match, Jose Mourinho didn’t hold back in defending his in-form man.
“People doubted him, but I always trusted him,” the Fenerbahce boss told the press. “When En-Nesyri arrived, he had no pre-season. He finished the season with Sevilla and then stopped. He wasn’t fit for 90 minutes.”
Mourinho says that at first, En-Nesyri wasn’t playing regularly alongside Edin Dzeko, which slowed his progress. “It was either him or Dzeko on the pitch, never both. But when I started playing them together, everything changed.”
Critics were quick to question the club’s decision to spend record-transfer money on the Moroccan. Some even pushed to offload him to Saudi Arabia in January to recoup the money. Mourinho, however, stood firm.
“The club, the directors, and I were all criticized for signing him,” Mourinho said. “But look at him now. He’s scoring in the league, in Europe, and in the Turkish Cup. And he’s done it without taking a single penalty.”
En-Nesyri knows what it’s like to be under pressure. He’s faced similar criticism with Morocco, but national team boss Walid Regragui has always backed him. Now, with his confidence soaring, he’ll be looking to carry this form into his international duty.
With Fenerbahce chasing silverware on multiple fronts, Mourinho will be hoping his red-hot striker keeps finding the net. If he does, there’s no doubt the critics will be eating their words yet again!
