Rabat – Authorities in Al Hoceima arrested a 43-year-old man on Thursday for suspected involvement in a criminal network that organizes illegal migration and human trafficking.
The operation took place in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
A police statement indicates that the suspect was preparing to facilitate the departure of eight individuals attempting to reach Europe by sea.
Security forces intercepted him before the crossing took place. A search led to the seizure of a fishing boat, two marine engines, and a sum of money believed to be linked to the operation.
According to a security source, the suspect had been under investigation for similar activities. A national arrest warrant had already been issued against him by the Royal Gendarmerie in Al Hoceima.
Officials suspect he played a key role in arranging unauthorized departures from the Moroccan coast.
The arrested man is now in custody as investigators work to uncover further details about his operations.
The individuals who sought to migrate are also under judicial investigation. Authorities need to determine whether they were exploited or complicit in the attempt to leave the country.
Security forces continue their efforts to dismantle networks involved in illegal migration as it is commonly believed that organized groups target desperate citizens hoping for a better future in Europe.
Many migrants face life-threatening risks at sea, with no guarantees of reaching their destination.
