Spanish police have uncovered an underground tunnel running from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, believed to have been a key route for smuggling huge amounts of hashish into Spain.
The hidden passage, dug 12 meters below ground, was discovered during a dramatic raid on a warehouse in Ceuta’s industrial zone, just meters away from the heavily guarded border double-gate with barbed wires on top separating the tiny Spanish enclave from Morocco.
Authorities believe the tunnel – narrow, reinforced with wooden beams, and at least 50 meters long – was being used by drug traffickers to ship illegal cargo into Spain right under the watchful eyes of border control. Even more shocking, the exact exit point in Morocco remains unknown, meaning the tunnel could be even longer than first thought.
The discovery came as part of Spain’s Operation Hades to crackdown on international drug cartels moving large amounts of hashish into Europe. So far, 14 people have been arrested, including two Spanish Civil Guard officers, after police seized a staggering six tons of drugs hidden inside trucks with secret compartments.
Moroccan cannabis continues to flood Europe in recent years. Last year, Moroccan and Spanish forces teamed up to seize over two tons of hashish off the coast of Gran Canaria.
Despite law enforcement ramping up their fight, traffickers show no signs of slowing down, constantly finding new, daring ways to dodge border controls using tunnels, speedboats, and even corrupt officials.
