Rabat – Alain Juillet, former director of intelligence at the French Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE), has commended Morocco’s efforts to combat terrorism, saying that the country has always been at the forefront.
He made the remarks in an interview with MAP news agency today as he commented on the recent operation in which Morocco’s security services thwarted a highly dangerous plot targeting the country. The terrorist plot was commissioned and instigated by a senior ISIS leader in the Sahel region.
Juillet spoke about the investigations carried out by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (OCIJ), which led to the monitoring of a mountainous area suspected of serving as a logistical base for storing weapons and ammunition.
This site was suspected of being used to support the members of the terrorist cell in carrying out their plans. On Wednesday, the country’s security services arrested 12 suspects aged between 18 and 40 for their involvement in the terrorist cell. The arrests were made in different operations across Morocco.
Juillet commended “the professionalism, effectiveness and proactive capacity of the Moroccan security services.”
In light of presence of extremist hotspots in the Sahel region, Juillet said that the proactive capacity of the security services is “very important” to prevent these members from carrying out their plans.
He noted that Morocco is known as “one of the most efficient countries in the fight against terrorism, thanks to the proactive capabilities of its security services and their precise knowledge of these milieus, which allows them to identify terrorist risks and threats very quickly.”
Juillet also recalled the “outstanding level” of cooperation between France and Morocco in the fight against terrorism.
“The Moroccan security services are achieving very positive results, they have accurate information, and the recent operation proves that they were able to intervene effectively before the attacks were carried out, which is very important in the fight against terrorism,” he concluded.
