Rabat – OCP Green Water has taken a significant step in securing water resources for Casablanca South by providing 60 million cubic meters of desalinated water per year.
This initiative, launched in October 2024, responds to growing water needs and boosts supply stability in the region.
Developed in collaboration with OCP Manufacturing, JESA, national and international industrial partners, and public authorities, the project addresses water stress in the Oum Rabii basin. It also shows OCP Group’s commitment to sustainable solutions in the face of increasing pressure on water resources.
Casablanca South is now supplied by a dedicated desalination unit at OCP’s Jorf Lasfar facility.
The plant initially supplied 20 million cubic meters per year in October 2024, before scaling up to 60 million cubic meters at the end of December. This development now covers more than a quarter of the city’s needs for potable water.
The project relies on advanced technology, including a desalination plant operated by OCP Green Water, a pumping station, and a 54.5-kilometer-long pipeline developed by public authorities.
The pipeline connects the installation to the Daourate dam station, which plays a critical role in Casablanca South’s water supply.
As part of its attempts to optimize resources and minimize its environmental impact, the project uses an innovative seawater recycling process. Integrated into the industrial operations of Jorf Lasfar, the system recycles desalinated seawater to minimize waste and improve efficiency.
This initiative directly contributes to improving water security by reinforcing potable water availability, supporting a growing urban population, and granting access to a stable water supply.
It also helps reduce pressure on natural sources, as advanced desalination technology preserves existing freshwater reserves and promotes non-conventional water solutions.
By diversifying water resources, the project strengthens resilience against climate challenges, mitigating risks associated with drought and extreme weather.
OCP Green Water is leading national efforts to develop non-conventional water sources, focusing on seawater desalination and wastewater treatment.
In the coming years, Khouribga, Youssoufia, Benguerir, and Marrakech will also benefit from similar projects. By the end of 2024, OCP Green Water’s desalination capacity at Jorf Lasfar and Safi reached 185 million cubic meters.
The group plans to increase this figure to 280 million cubic meters in 2025 and 560 million cubic meters by 2027, alongside wastewater treatment capacity of 50 million cubic meters.
In collaboration with OCP Group, the government, and industrial partners, OCP Green Water continues to expand access to sustainable water resources while integrating innovation and environmental responsibility into its long-term strategy.
