Join on Telegram Rangers FC has told fans heading to Istanbul for the UEFA Europa League match with Fenerbahce to respect local customs — as the match falls during Ramadan.
The first-leg tie is set for Thursday, March 6, right in the middle of the sacred month when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, pray, and focus on charity and spiritual reflection.
In a message to supporters, Rangers urged fans to avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum in public before sunset. Loud music, dancing, and swearing would also cross the line.
The club said in a statement: “Please be respectful of local traditions. Bars and restaurants will be open, but be mindful of public spaces.”
Fans can explore tourist hotspots like Sultanahmet, Taksim, and Beyoglu — but they should be ready for tight security on match day. There will be rigorous body searches, and after the final whistle, supporters will be kept in the stadium for up to two hours while buses are organized to return them to Sultanahmet Square.
Those staying on the Asian side of the city should contact the club ahead of time to sort travel plans.
Fenerbahce also issued its own warning, asking visiting fans to show cultural awareness during their stay. The Turkish club echoed Rangers’ advice, stressing the importance of respecting Ramadan customs in the muslim-majority country.
Fans were also told to prepare for limited facilities at the stadium and to avoid wearing club colors where possible.
The return leg takes place in Scotland on March 13.
