Rabat – The Moroccan national women’s team has climbed one spot in the latest FIFA World Ranking, securing the 60th spot worldwide. The new ranking was released today.
Leading national women’s teams is the United States, followed by Spain, Germany, and England, all of which maintained their spots from the last ranking.
Meanwhile, Japan now claims the fifth spot after a three-point improvement, followed by Sweden, Canada, and Brazil, who lost one point each.
Wrapping up the top 10 are North Korea and the Netherlands in ninth and 10th positions, respectively.
The Moroccan team is ranked third in Africa, behind Nigeria (36th globally) and South Africa (40th globally).
The Atlas Lionesses are gearing up for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is taking place between July 5 and 26 in Morocco.
The tournament’s draw has placed Morocco in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Speaking to the media last month, the team’s captain, Ghizlane Chebbak, said she is optimistic about the team’s future, adding that her teammates are determined to compete with great challenge and ambition to win the continental title for the first time.
She made the remarks following the team’s friendly game against Ghana, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Morocco. “The Ghanaian team is strong, and we wanted to play against tough teams like this to test our real level. Today, thankfully, we managed to win, but it was difficult,” Chebbak said.
She noted that the national team will keep training to improve their weak points ahead of the WAFCON.
The team will be looking to build on their strong performance at the 2022 WAFCON, where Morocco reached the final for the first time ever.
