Rabat – Spain has designated Morocco as a priority region in the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation’s (AECID) 2025 grant program, allocating €85 million to the North African kingdom.

AECID recently unveiled its list of beneficiaries for next year’s grant program, where Morocco appeared as a key focus area.

This substantial financial commitment signals the growing bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Spanish newspaper La Gaceta reported that the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to accomplish several core objectives through its Moroccan initiatives.

These embody eliminating gender disparities, fighting all forms of gender-based violence, and developing sustainable tourism that creates employment opportunities. The funding will focus on three regions, Marrakech-Safi, Casablanca-Settat, and Souss-Massa.

Spain’s Finance Ministry data shows that Madrid has already distributed nearly €300 million in grants to about 250 organizations and foreign entities throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry tops the list of recipients, having secured almost €30 million by late September 2023 specifically for combating illegal immigration.

The North African country has also received various other Spanish grants, including €225,000 for the Nahda Association of Water and Electricity Professionals in Tangier, €10 million for coast guard service improvements, €650,000 for the Health Ministry, and €108,000 for the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

In January, Madrid also approved a €2.5 million package to purchase vehicles and equipment to strengthen Moroccan authorities’ border surveillance capabilities.

This significant investment demonstrates Spain’s strategic interest in enhancing Morocco’s development and stability, recognizing the crucial role the North African country plays in regional security, migration management, and economic partnership.

As both countries continue to address complex regional challenges, this financial commitment signals Spain’s recognition of Morocco as an essential ally in managing shared concerns across the Mediterranean region.
