Rabat – Police in Tangier arrested a man on Monday evening for allegedly robbing a money transfer agency after threatening an employee with arson.
Earlier that morning, the suspect entered the agency, poured a flammable liquid, and warned the employee that he would set the place on fire unless he received money. Fearing for her safety, the employee complied.Â
Hours later, investigators identified and tracked down the suspect, as well as recovered the stolen money in the process.Â
Authorities placed him in custody as part of an ongoing investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.Â
The inquiry seeks to establish the full details of the case and determine whether he has committed other crimes.Â
Incidents of armed robbery at financial institutions have always raised concerns among Moroccans. Many have called for stricter security measures, better surveillance protocols, and additional personnel at high-risk locations. Â
The case tells broader crime trends in Morocco. According to DGSN’s 2024 annual report, Moroccan police had a record of 95% crime-solving rate in 2024.
While incidents of theft and violent assault have declined, cybercrime and drug-related offenses have risen.
Violent crimes, including thefts, sexual assaults, and car thefts, dropped by 12%, the report also notes.
