Rabat – Morocco’s national football team is ranked second globally for the most wins in the 2020s, according to Transfer Market.
With 49 victories in 68 matches, the Atlas Lions have proven their strength on the international stage and are outperforming most of the world’s biggest football powerhouses.
The team’s historic run in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they became the first African and Arab country to reach the semi-finals, heavily contributed to their rise in the ranking.
After being seen as one of the tournament’s underdogs, the Moroccan squad defied all odds and managed to beat some of the favorites to win the global event. This includes tough teams like Spain and Portugal.
Morocco, under the leadership of coach Walid Regragui, has continued to dominate and secure key victories in African competitions and international friendlies.
Argentina tops the ranking with 50 wins in 62 games, fueled by their Copa America and 2022 World Cup triumphs. The United States follows Morocco in third place with 45 wins in 76 games, while Euro 2024 champions Spain ranks fourth with 44 wins in 66 games.
Other top-ranked nations include Japan in fifth place, followed by Portugal, Algeria, England, Mexico, and Senegal, respectively.
Now the Moroccan national team is set on maintaining its strong international standing as the 2026 World Cup is approaching.
The team is set to lock horns with Tanzania and Niger later this month as part of the African qualifiers of the competition.
“What I’m interested in now is preparing for the Niger and Tanzania matches and making sure we qualify for the World Cup,” Regragui recently said in a press conference.
According to FIFA, Morocco enjoys a “prime position” in their qualifying journey to the 2026 World Cup.
“Regragui’s recent success and Diaz’s great form are just two of the many factors that make Morocco a contender to be one of the first African teams to qualify for the World Cup,” the football governing body highlighted recently.
