Rabat – OCP Nutricrops, a subsidiary of the OCP Group and a leader in phosphate-based fertilizers, has announced a major investment to increase its fertilizer production capacity by 9 million tons by 2028.
The company will achieve this by developing two new mining and industrial hubs: Mzinda in Youssoufia and Meskala in Essaouira.
“These facilities, integrating cutting-edge technology and sustainability principles, will progressively increase fertilizer production capacity by 9 million tons by 2028 (notably TSP and TSP+), with 4.5 million tons expected as early as 2026,” OCP Nutricrops said in a statement.
It added that the project is part of the SP2M program, which aims to significantly increase OCP Group’s production capacity while strengthening its competitiveness and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040.
The Mzinda and Meskala hubs represent a new generation of industrial sites that integrate cutting-edge Industry 5.0 technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and automation.
The subsidiary noted that they are designed to operate entirely on renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
In addition, they will use non-conventional water sources, such as desalinated water and treated wastewater, which reinforces OCP Nutricrops’ commitment to sustainable and efficient production, OCP Nutricrops added.
The subsidiary argued that these hubs can adapt to market changes and optimize the value chain thanks to their modular and flexible design. This would ensure a reliable supply of fertilizers tailored to farmers’ needs worldwide.
The facilities will focus on producing high-quality phosphate fertilizers, particularly TSP and TSP+, to meet the growing global demand for sustainable fertilizers.
Beyond industrial production, OCP expects these hubs to help create a strong regional economic ecosystem. The subsidiary is working with key partners such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), INNOVX, and JESA to develop local and international partnerships in green energy, circular economy, and Industry 5.0. These efforts aim to strengthen local communities by improving skills development and promoting sustainable practices.
“These new industrial assets will become a global benchmark in customized fertilizers and reflect our commitment to addressing global agricultural challenges while offering our partners opportunities for sustainable growth,” said Youssef El Bari, CEO of OCP Nutricrops.
According to Abdelghani Filali, Managing Director of SP2M, the Mzinda and Meskala projects will have a major economic and social impact, as it is set to “create sustainable opportunities for local communities.”
