Rabat – A growing outcry to declare Polisario a terrorist group has been ongoing, with many seeing the separatist group as a threat to the region’s security and stability.
Liam Fox, former Secretary of State for Defense in the UK, has joined the chorus of politicians who see labeling Polisario as a terrorist group as necessary due to its political agenda backed by the Algerian regime.
“Like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Polisario Front is an Iranian proxy organisation. For the sake of our Moroccan allies, Western governments must move quickly to designate this group as a terrorist organisation,” Fox wrote on X.
Ireland’s first independently elected senator, Gerard Craughwell, made the same appeal on his X, describing Morocco as a “beautiful, peaceful country.”
“No way can the Polisario Front be allowed to destroy Morocco as #Hamas & ##Hezbollah destroyed the #Gaza strip. We stand with #Morocco,” he said on his X.
The statement came just a few days after an analysis was released from the Hudson Institute, calling for the designation of the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization.
The comprehensive report shattered the Polisario’s self-portrayal as a liberation movement, unmasking its acts, including arms smuggling and the indoctrination of youth.
“The Polisario Front claims to fight for self-determination in the region. But the organization carries a legacy of destabilization,” the institute said, recalling Algeria’s support for the separatist group.
The institution’s appeal came as Morocco continues to build momentum for its territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
On April 8, the US renewed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, declaring Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only basis and the feasible solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The US also stressed that it is ready to facilitate talks between all the parties and urge them to engage in the UN-led political process to end the dispute.
UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura responded to the US position during a briefing at the UN Security Council, calling for a detailed discussion on the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.
During his briefing, he acknowledged the diplomatic momentum, including the unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative from major powers like the US.
De Misutra recalled the US statements, noting that this echoes “what I believe and what I am calling for – the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative must be explained in detail, and a clear meaning must be given to the prerogatives that would be granted to a truly autonomous Western Sahara.”
Following the US statements, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson commended the US’ strategic alliance with Morocco, announcing that he will introduce legislation to designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist entity.
“I will introduce legislation to designate the Polisario as terrorists,” Wilson wrote on X earlier this month.
Wilson made the same remarks in January, recalling his appearance during a public congressional session.
“War criminal Putin, Iran, and Cuba are actively destabilizing West Africa by supporting the Polisario Front, a threat to the Kingdom of Morocco,” he said, stressing Morocco’s strategic importance as a long-standing ally to the US.
