Rabat — Morocco’s southern provinces are attracting more international investment interest, as the UK’s Parliament Member Liam Fox urged British companies to seize investment opportunities in the region.

The UK official also spoke of the assets that the North African country has, particularly in its southern provinces, recalling Morocco’s strategic geographical location in North Africa.

Speaking to Morocco’s official news agency, MAP, on the sidelines of Innovation Zero World energy conference in London Fox said that “British companies looking for partnerships should take a closer look at what Morocco has to offer, particularly in the Kingdom’s southern provinces.”

The world’s leading energy transition event provided a platform for Moroccan leaders from its southern provinces to exhibit the regions’ economic resources and display the development that had been made.

Speaking of Morocco’s participation at the London conference, Fox said it is an opportunity to promote a positive image of the country’s southern provinces to attract more investments.

Among the region’s top investment attractions, Fox mentioned Dakhla-Atlantic port, which has increasingly become a draw for business opportunities, as well as environmental projects, particularly in the realm of renewable energy.

Morocco is a gateway to Africa, he noted, adding that political stability, as well as its natural resources, makes the country an attractive economic hub to host foreign investments.

These ingredients provide an atmosphere of smooth-running business activities in the North African country.

Southern provinces development

A key fascet of Morocco’s Development Model is advancing its southern provinces and leveling up their contribution to the socio-economic dynamic, therefore creating jobs and investment opportunities, and providing the region with the infrastructure and facilities it needs.

A large budget has been put towards this endeavor – estimated to be around MAD 77 billion ($7.1 billion).
The new Dakhla Atlantic port $3.3 billion project that the UK MP mentioned is just one of the key parts of Morocco’s broader socio-economic development strategy for the region, with the Tiznit-Dakhla highway as another crucial component, among others.

In 2024, over 30 MPs and peers signed a letter to the then foreign secretary Lord Cameron, urging the government to recognize Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most viable solution and path to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

“Morocco stands paramount among these partner nations; it is a top strategic ally in North Africa, with shared values and perspectives crucial to both our countries,” the petition reads.

Several MPs have individually echoed the same demand, calling on the UK to adopt a similar position as countries that have explicitly expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.
