Rabat – Oncorad Group, an organization specialized in cancer prevention and treatment in Morocco, celebrated the success of the very first cryoblation procedure in Morocco and North Africa as a whole.

In a statement shared with Morocco World News (MWN) today, the group said the historic intervention took place at Littoral Clinic Ain Diab, in Casablanca.

Alae Mrani Zentar, an expert in interventional radiology at the group, performed the procedure. Cryoablation is an interventional radiology procedure that involves freezing and destroying tumor lesions using extreme cold. The Moroccan doctor has become an international reference in the field, the statement added.

The group is now offering its patients a “more precise, less invasive, and better-tolerated therapeutic alternative,” the statement quoted Mrani Zentar as saying.

The statement further detailed that four cryoablation procedures were performed at the clinic in Ain Diab, noting that interventional radiology has been part of the group‘s approach for several years.

“[It is] a discipline that is revolutionizing modern medicine by allowing many conditions to be treated in a targeted, precise, and far less invasive manner than traditional surgery,” the statement said, citing real-time imaging to guide therapeutic procedures.

Recent data shows that approximately 40,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed annually in Morocco, with a concerning incidence rate of 137.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The latest report from the Moroccan Network for the Defense of the Right to Health and the Right to Life said in February that 140 new cancer cases are diagnosed daily in Morocco, translating to over 40,000 new cases annually.

Among women, breast cancer leads with 36%, followed by cervical cancer at 11%. For men, lung cancer dominates at 22% of cases, and prostate cancer follows at 12.6%.
