Rabat – Around 17 people, including five minors, ended up in police custody on Saturday night after violence broke out around Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium during the Wydad vs AS FAR football match (2-1).
Security forces, already deployed in anticipation of possible disturbances, stepped in as tensions rose before kickoff and throughout the night.
Among those arrested were individuals suspected of carrying knives, using drugs, and throwing fireworks and stones. Officers also seized pyrotechnics and other banned items during the operation.
Widely shared videos on social media showed violent altercations and chaotic scenes between opposing groups.
The crowd unrest did not stop at clashes between fans. Several officers suffered injuries after being pelted with stones while trying to maintain order.
In a separate incident near the stadium, police found an unaccompanied minor wandering through the crowd. They quickly contacted the child’s guardians and ensured the minor’s safe return home.
The adults now face formal charges and remain in custody, while the minors have been placed under judicial supervision. Authorities continue their investigation to identify others involved in the disturbances and understand what led to the escalation.
The match itself, once expected to bring fans together, ended under the shadow of these incidents, raising new concerns over repeated episodes of football-related unrest in Moroccan stadiums.
Hooliganism is becoming an increasing concern at Morocco’s national football matches, prompting authorities to implement strong measures to safeguard public safety during sporting events.
Some of these measures include an increased police presence at high-risk games, the installation of surveillance cameras, and strict laws targeting violent behavior.
