Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to 1,526 inmates, according to the Ministry of Justice.

These include both prisoners and individuals who had been sentenced but are not currently in custody.

The royal pardon is a customary act by the King, often issued on religious holidays like Eid Al Adha.

Among those granted clemency, 1,305 individuals are currently in prison. Of these, 72 inmates received a full pardon from the remainder of their prison sentences.

Another 1,229 had their prison terms reduced, while four inmates had their life sentences converted into fixed prison terms.

In addition, 206 individuals who are not in prison but had been sentenced also benefited from the pardon. This group includes 71 people who received a full pardon for their prison sentences or the remaining time.

Six others were pardoned from prison sentences but are still required to pay fines. Meanwhile, 115 people were pardoned from paying fines altogether.

Another 12 individuals received a pardon from both prison sentences and fines, and two were pardoned from both the fine and the remainder of their prison term.

In addition, the King extended his royal pardon to 15 individuals convicted in cases related to extremism and terrorism. The ministry said in a statement that these individuals had shown true repentance, rejected extremist ideas, and expressed loyalty to Morocco’s national values and institutions.

Of those, five individuals were pardoned from both their prison sentences and fines, while 10 inmates had their prison sentences reduced.

The royal pardon shows the King’s compassion and his commitment to giving people a second chance, especially on a religious and joyful occasion like Eid Al Adha, concluded the statement.

Morocco will celebrate the religious holiday on Saturday, June 7.
