Rabat – The #JusticepourRita is sweeping social media across Morocco, with Moroccans demanding justice, accountability, and stricter beach safety regulations.
This comes after a four-year-old girl named Ghita was violently struck in the head by a speeding 4×4 towing a jet ski along the shore on June 15 in Dar Bouazza, an area in the Casablanca-Settat region.
Ghita’s family described the situation as a “waking nightmare,” as their daughter underwent an emergency brain surgery the same day.
As Ghita fights for her life, her condition remains critical.
Ghita’s father said the accident happened when he turned around for a few seconds to drink water, only to find his daughter motionless on the ground.
Rushing her to the nearest clinic, the medical staff confirmed she suffered from severe skull fractures.
“I took my daughter and I asked the same person who hit her to drive us to a clinic. My car was far away and blocked by other vehicles,” the father said in an interview.
The day after the accident, the suspect’s family members visited the clinic to check on Ghita, the father said.
“One of my relatives: ‘The guy who committed this crime should be punished.’”
However, members of the suspect’s family allegedly stated outright that nothing could be done “because they have money.”
“It means that our daughter’s life does not matter to them. They believe they can prove their son’s innocence with money. I haven’t gone to my house for a week.. I cannot go home,” the father said, in tears.
The suspect’s legal team has allegedly attempted to blame the father, accusing him of not watching his daughter closely enough.
“To my knowledge, the beach is for relaxing…It’s a place where children should play comfortably.”
“Legally speaking, vehicles are not allowed on the beaches. Even authorities use horses to come to check on people’s safety. We call for justice, nothing more than justice,” the father said.
Many Moroccans have taken to social media to express solidarity with Ghita’s family and demand justice.
Some used pictures of Ghita in the clinic after the surgery, while others shared and posted the hashtag and prayers.
“Wishing good recovery for the poor girl… The culprit should be prosecuted, at least we know there is law and order in this country, and let her father get some peace of mind,” one commenter on C wrote..
“This is heartbreaking,” another one wrote, while others called on the media to take the case seriously and speak up about Ghita’s situation.
