Marrakech – A woman died in Algeciras, southern Spain, on Saturday night after a Moroccan flag she wore around her neck became entangled in the rear wheel of a motorcycle, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The fatal accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of the Getares road and Avenida 28 de Febrero, near the San García neighborhood. The woman was riding as a passenger on a large-displacement motorcycle driven by her husband during celebrations that followed Morocco’s qualification for the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to preliminary findings, the victim had a Moroccan flag tied around her neck. The fabric got trapped in the rear wheel of the motorcycle while it was in motion. The entanglement caused the bike to flip, leaving the woman unconscious at the scene with injuries described as extremely severe.
The Andalusia 112 Emergency Service received the alert shortly after 11:00 p.m. and dispatched the Local Police, the Civil Guard, and medical responders. Officers who arrived first attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used a semi-automatic external defibrillator from the patrol vehicle, but could not revive her.
Paramedics continued treatment at the scene before transferring the woman to the emergency ward at Hospital Punta Europa. Medical staff there confirmed her death minutes later.
The victim’s age remains unclear. Some Spanish outlets reported she was 39 years old, while at least one other source put her age at 26. Authorities have not issued a definitive confirmation.
As part of standard procedure, the Local Police’s Traffic Accident Investigation Unit administered a breathalyzer test to the motorcycle’s driver, the woman’s husband. The result came back negative at 0.0 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air.
The Algeciras Local Police said the investigation remains open to determine the full circumstances of the crash.
José Ignacio Landaluce, the mayor of Algeciras, expressed what he called “deep dismay over this tragedy.” He extended his “affection and closeness to the family and loved ones,” adding, “We stand with them in their grief.”
The accident took place amid widespread celebrations across Spanish cities with large Moroccan communities. Fans had taken to the streets on foot, in cars, and on motorcycles to mark the national team’s World Cup result. The festivities in the Algeciras area turned fatal when the flag, a common fixture of such celebrations, became the cause of the deadly crash.
